AKC Sanctioned A Hunt Test Match ~ March 4, 2006

Where:         Piedmont Bird Hunter’s Club ~ Monroe, NC (Charlotte area)

Who:             Judges were VCC Member Don Brown & Joe Stringer

The club held its 2nd Sanctioned A Hunt Test match in Monroe, NC on March 4th.  The VCC used the Piedmont Bird Hunters Club grounds again.

Overall, the match ran very smoothly.  Club volunteers benefited from the experience gained during the first match last fall.  Beth Kirven (President) and Dick Teal (Director) were largely responsible for getting things organized before the match and making sure the event ran smoothly.  All of the volunteers chipped in cheerfully and made the event a lot of fun.

Thanks should go Anna Defenbaugh for doing the premium and Abbie Hanson for helping with the score sheets and pitching in generally.   Chuck “Sure Shot” Hanson was our gunner, and maintained his now considerable reputation for hitting the birds with the first shot.

The VCC Hunt Test Committee especially thanks Don Brown for supporting our efforts at both Sanctioned A matches by being Master of the Guns in the October match and judging the March match.  In addition, Don hosted our very successful field seminar in Clarksville, VA last fall.

The weather was nearly perfect on the day of the match, and the grounds were in excellent condition.  Our AKC Licensed Judges, Don Brown and Joe Stringer were a pleasure to run under.  The Senior Hunter brace of Piroska Toldin We Have Lift Off JH "Rocket" and Weimaraner CH Nani's Sophisticated Lady "Sophie" ran  well together. Neither qualified, but it was a good experience for both dogs.

The Junior Hunter class was a very successful one.  Six out of the eight entries qualified and 100% of the Vizslas entered qualified. The qualifiers included Vizslas Solaris Pearl Diver “Pearl”, Ch. Quail Quest’s French Kiss JH “Bisous”, Quail Quest’s Cover Girl JH “Christie”, Frankfurt’s Lacey Sun Meadow “Lacey”, and Nottingham’s Mona Lisa “Mona”.  Weimaraner Ch. Nani’s Cool Your Jetts “Cool” also qualified in JH.

Beth Kirven, Anna Defenbaugh, Leslie Stack and Tracee Lewis handled junior dogs in the match.  A special congratulation to Tracee Lewis and Mona for qualifying, as it was the first time either had participated in a hunt test.  Club member Leslie Stacks didn’t  believe that her 8-year old Vizsla, Lacey, remembered how to hunt.  Lacey showed her otherwise by finding birds, pointing, and earning a qualifying score.  The judges commented that they saw a lot of nice dogs and it was a pleasure to judge them.

It’s official!  The AKC approved our second Sanctioned A Hunt Test match held in March.  The club is now licensed to hold AKC Hunt Tests.   Thanks go to all of the volunteers at both matches as well as the club members who ran their dogs to support the club.  A special thanks to VCC friend, Larry Sorensen for persuading the AKC to allow us to hold our second Sanctioned A match in March rather than making us wait until next fall.
