Nationals Field Trial Commentaries:

Since there are no VCC member field trial results to convey, instead commentaries gathered by Field Trial Chair, Lynn Worth, are listed below:

Chauncey Smith:
"The first half of the course was great to show a true gun dog.  There was room for a good dog to reach out and show well on the edges -- which most of the dogs did.  The second half was a little tight and cover too thick -- but a good dog cut down and found birds.

What I find happening to our handlers these days is that they would like to see their dogs at all times around the course.  This tells me that they don't trust the dogs out of their sight.  I've been on a lot of grounds all over the country and have yet to go to a perfect trial.  But, I thought this trial was a good one.  Everyone was just great. I must say thanks to everyone, for everyone showed great sportsmanship.  Thanks to all you folks and especially to Dave Kayser.  I couldn't have done it without him."

Larry McDonald:  (National Amateur Championship Judge)
"I really enjoyed judging your trial and meeting new people.  I was treated great, and appreciated your hospitality. Now, a little about the dogs.  In the first series we saw some really fine performances.  We decided to call ten dogs back for the second series.  Something seemed to have happened between the first and second series . . . maybe the birds had kniv! es to cut the dogs' throats.  Some very good dogs from the first series did not make it through the second series.  However, we ended up with four good dogs -- the first and second place dogs were championship performances."

Dave Pomfret:  (professional handler)
"All in all it was a great! event.  The trial ran like clockwork with a dog wagon that was p rompt and most accommodating.  At first, I thought the camp area was a bit small and crowded, but everyone did just fine and you really got to know your neighbor.  I know there are hundreds of hours by dozens of unnoticed volunteers to put on an event of these proportions and to keep it going harmoniously day after day."
