AKC Sanctioned A Hunt Test Match ~ October 29, 2005

WHERE:         Piedmont Bird Hunter’s Club ~ Monroe, NC (Charlotte area)

Judges were VCC Members Dick Teal & Linda Pruitt  (who are both AKC licensed hunt test judges)

Hunt Test Match Committee: Rick Lewis, Ron Sayers, John Gentry, Beth Dake-Kirven, and Bonita Austin (chair).

The VCC held our first AKC Sanctioned A Hunt Test Match on October 29th in Monroe, NC at the Piedmont Bird Hunter’s club grounds. The frosted grounds made for a chilly morning, but once the dogs realized why they had been woken up so early on a Saturday morning, they perked right up. The sight of horses and scent of quail in the bird bags was enough to spark the desire to get out  and hunt birds.

There were four Junior Hunter braces and one Versatility field brace, comprised mainly of a few old ladies and many puppies & young dogs. The back course was seeded to allow additional opportunities for the dogs to find birds. Each brace was given around 20—30 minutes to run, since the overall entry was less than expected. The bird field was located on a slight incline so spectators could stand at the top of the hill and watch the dogs work… and allow the dogs waiting to run, build desire for their turn.

Dick Teal & Linda Pruitt judged professionally, and were quite helpful to all the participants answering questions and reminding us what we needed to know before starting the brace. Judge Teal commented that he saw some nice dogs run, and was pleased that the handlers allowed their dogs to do their job without much ‘hacking’ ~ a commonality among novice and Junior handlers.

The AKC requires the VCC to hold one more Sanctioned A hunt test match at least 6 months from now in order to qualify to obtain a license to hold official AKC Hunt Tests. Plans are already in the works as to possible venues and dates. If you missed this hunt test match in Monroe, you’ll want to attend the next one ~ your dogs won’t forgive you if you miss another one!
