2011 Success Stories!

Benny

My wife and I got our first vizsla, "Bella" from a reputable breeder in town and it wasn't long before we decided she needed a playmate.  A few weeks later our breeder informed us of a two year old male " Benny"  available for adoption, and would be a good match for Bella.  After a few phone calls and e mails, the kind foster family drove 4 and a half hours to bring Benny to us and it was love at first sight!  He was skinny and a little shy and didn't have a lot of energy due to getting over worms  etc. Our female instantly bonded with him, even though he wasn't so sure. They have now become inseparable and have to be with each other all the time. They always crash on the couch after a hard romp together. Benny is making great progress with his coat, weight and his social skills.  He has learned to swim and play with other dogs and people. How anyone could mistreat this sweet boy I will  never know. I want to thank everyone involved in bringing Benny into our lives.

Red

Red, came from a long distance away;  A wonderful couple, Jerry and Maggie, had suddenly lost their Vizsla to a massive hemorrhage and had called Rescue telling us how empty their nest was.  Along comes Red...another great 2 yr old.. Yet another success story will be forthcoming soon!

Millie

When my wife and I first adopted Millie, we were her fourth home in a month.  The first few days, Millie was very underweight, shy and fearful of her new home.  In the two months we have had Millie, she has definitely come around.  When we first got her, she had a coat that was more yellow than red, but after a couple of months of good food, she has gotten her 'vizlsa" coat in and is on her way to being a healthy weight.  She has shown herself to be quite the agility and retrieving dog playing fetch with lacrosse balls and frisbees for hours.  She is becoming a great dog, though one that still is the epitome of being a "velcro" dog.  We are working with her on her inside manners, but overall, she is doing awesome and is looking forward to a summer of helping me coach lacrosse.

 Catch

http://www.carolinavizsla.org/Catch1.jpg

It had been a few years since I had a dog. I wanted to make sure I had the time to commit before taking on this responsibility. When I was ready, I contacted the VCA Rep. through the Vizsla club of the Carolinas, just to let them know that when they had a rescue that needed a home, that I would love to adopt a Vizsla. It just so happened that they had a young pup that was in a foster home, and was ready to place immediately. We went through the process to make sure this would be a good fit, and I ended up with a 4 month old bundle of energy that I named "Catch". The reason that he is perfect for me is the reason that he was in need of rescue. He's a high energy puppy that wants lots of attention and will bark if he doesn't get it. All typical Vizsla behavior. Unfortunately, a couple of previous owners did not know what they were asking for when they got a Vizsla pup. I have had "Catch" for a month now and we are both very happy. He has not met a person or animal that he doesn't love. Due to his age we've kept our runs short, but he is showing he will be a perfect running companion for me. He is so smart and so willing to please that I don't feel that we can call teaching him new stuff "training". Thank you VCC and VCA  for bringing Catch into my life.

 Eden

After losing our 15+ year old Dalmatian seven years ago, we felt it was finally time for another dog.  (Yes, it took us that long to get over the loss)  We decided to rescue a dog and not just any dog but a Vizsla!

When contacted concerning a 4-year-old female that was looking for a home, we were anxious to meet her even though we were looking for a 2 year old or younger.  She (Eden) came home with us that day!  Eden has been a joy from day one.  Makes us laugh at her antics and is so happy to see us even if we are out of her sight for few minutes.  Much to our surprise and delight, Eden adjusted quickly to her new home.  How quickly you might ask, my answer would have to be within the first 5 minutes.  After she quickly toured the yard and the inside of the house, she looked up at us with a silly grin on her face and her tail wagging so hard her whole body shook.   The first night we thought, oh boy, this is going to be an interesting and long night with her sleeping in a new environment.  The joke was on us, when we said let’s go to bed she raced to the bedroom and immediately settled down on her bed, slept through the night and did not get up until we did.  Talk about bliss, that did it, one has to love her!  She loves to run around in the yard and “help/supervise” with everything you may be doing.  She likes everyone she meets as well as other dogs, cats and children.  She is a “Velcro” dog and does not let you forget it for one minute! We are wagging happy!

 Jaxon

WOW, one morning recently I got an e mail from a young woman who is a boarding kennel worker...she had been taking Jaxson a 12 y/o drop-off...we can't give him the attention he deserves.....a year before...he had been living at the boarding kennel as well as Karen taking him home many nights to get him out of the kennel situation. Jaxson is the happiest camper of all...living large with the Goldstein's in Raleigh. A VERY SPECIAL COUPLE! A couple recognizing that old dogs need love as well and stepped right up and gave him a great home! KUDOS..

Ranger

Ranger came into rescue at the age of 7+ and is being loved & cared for by these wonderful girls (& their parents of course!). He was fostered & evaluated by our 'doggie person', Debbie Womble, and now has become the girls' best bud. Sometimes older IS better! Even this age needs lovin'!

Cooper

We were lucky enough to get Cooper when he was just 3 months old & he took to us in no time! Some of Cooper's favorite activities are going to Lowes, hanging out at Sean's office, eating sticks, playing at the dog park, chasing his Kong around the house & staring out the windows. We feel very lucky to have gotten such a wonderful dog to share our lives with!

Rusty - Jake

A story of his journey: he came from a shelter in TN to a wonderful VCC member's home ~ a retired fire chief who thought she could perhaps teach this puppy to be a SAR dog. NOT. This red one, while a happy dog, was too rambunctious to learn the ins & outs of S&R. Karen helped re-home him with a great couple who had Vizslas for a long time. After lots of training, he has become the Vizsla the family has hoped for.

Brady

Brady, a 6 year old, came from a shelter close to the USMC base in NC. He was fostered, treated for heartworm, brought back to good health & went to live in MI with a wonderful woman. Brady & his companion have become inseparable. Another good adoption & lucky red dog!

2010 Rescue Success Stories!

Herbie

Herbie was another shelter dog, who has gone to an absolutely faaabbbulous home. He has Mikos as his buddy & mentor. He did go through the customary naughty V stage (something his new parents had not experienced for a long time!), but with some work, he has become the cute little fellow he should be.

Jackson #1

A lucky boy for sure. An owner surrender, he was very very thin  and needed some medical care before being adopted. He learned that life could be a lot of fun. Erica and Bryan kindly fostered him for a couple of months while he recuperated from both neutering as well as what all concerned thought was a heart condition. A trip to NCSU (thanks Erica) confirmed that he probably has a functional murmur and should live a happy life. He has been  adopted by Christy and Ken who have set out to spoil him beyond belief.

Jackson #2 and Odie

These boys were of a pair that Rescue was called to investigate. They were found wandering down a dirt road (so the report states), turned into one of the best shelters around (they promptly contacted us)! Scott  and Tiffany W. did the  honors (said boys did well at their house overnight and then got them to the foster homes...and now adopted! One boy went to nurse in NC (thank you Penny R. for doing the footwork there). She has another older V named Reagan and apparently he is happy with his young new friend. The second one went to a young woman who had recently lost her V of 16 years and on a whim between meetings, called us! She agreed to foster (haha), Odie is happily keeping Karen L. and her mom company. Could not ask for a better outcome.

Marley (a most popular name now).

Chris called and tearfully  said he had to rehome his  4 yr. old dog, Marley that he had raised from a pup and had contemplated several venues but decided that Vizsla Rescue was the way to go. He has since said thank you so many times because he knows Marley has a good home...not to mention another dog to run with. That would be Titan, another lucky boy, from the pound. The picture shows the happy family with of course, Marley rarin' to go! What else, he IS a Vizsla!!!

Suzette & Dale made an application to adopt another Vizsla through VCC Rescue. Buddy just happened to be available and a great fit for them! He is now part of a 2 V - 2 Lab household... latest news is he loves the water!

Cody

http://www.carolinavizsla.org/Cody%20001%2030%25.jpg

If I didn't know any better, I would say that our beloved dog Max even planned the way he wanted to die. Although Max was a Vizsla mix, he epitomized the phrase 'velcro dog'.

There was not a day in his life that Max was not there to help me bring in groceries, small pieces of dirty laundry, and pick up items off the floor.  Ultimately, on Monday, April 20, 2009, Max died in my arms.  Hold off the tears, because this story does have a happy ending!

Somehow, by August of 2009 I managed to talk my husband into adopting another Vizsla or Vizsla mix.  Although my husband Greg loved our dog Max, he couldn’t help but remember how we had to deal with Max’s severe separation anxiety.  Our home and furniture still show the very scars that Max left behind as a reminder.  I got in touch with the Vizsla Club of the Carolinas and we began the process to adopt another four-legged friend into our home.

After several months of communicating back and forth and making unsuccessful trips to area shelters we were all beginning to think that maybe it was just not meant for us to have another pet in our home.  Little did we know that by responding to an e-mail message the week before Christmas our wait would be over!  On December 26, 2009, we welcomed Cody  into our home!  Although this story does have a fairy tale ending, it is not without its share of not so very fairytale-like daily challenges.  There were potty training issues, learning to behave indoors, getting along with the rest of our pets, not swallowing our food and water in 2 seconds flat, etc...However, we are amazed at how far Cody has come – he is by far the smartest, friendliest and most understanding dog that we’ve ever fallen in love with!
